Two races of the Canadian Triple Crown had ran, with Instant Success emerging victorious, and only one remained. The Breeder's Stakes was not only the longest of the three races - at twelve furlongs - but also the only one to run on turf. It was this that made the Canadian Triple Crown so special and difficult to obtain - if a horse did not excel on both surfaces they would not be able to claim all three races and be named a champion. But if they could claim the title then they had truly earned a place in history, securing themselves a place in history. It was a rare honour, and it was quite amazing that in it's first year of running at The Wire any horse had come so close to it. But the last race still remained and there was nothing certain with the entries.
Where he had been among the strongest competitors for the previous two races it was likely that Isa would not be starting the Breeder's Stakes as a favourite - the other two entrants had both ran in the Turf Triple Crown and were solely turf runners while he had ran in the dirt and was dual surfaced. But he had won several turf races before, he had a deal of experience in major races, and his form of late had been amazing. Plus, it would have been boring if the colt had been a clear winner - where was an achievement without facing a challenge to get it? But Matthias was sure Isa stood a good chance if he ran as well as he had in the previous two races and was hopeful. Of course, if they managed this then their stable would really have cemented it's place in history with two three year old series wins in one year.
Infinite Warcry and Frozen Motion... They were tough competitors and Jacob Donovan, Isa's jockey, knew it well. In the Turf Triple Crown both colts had truly wowed crowds and the rivalry which had begun to form between them was fierce. Isa had faced Infinite Warcry before, and it had not ended well for the chestnut colt who had cruised into second place; but he had had never faced Frozen Motion. Of course, past performances were not all that mattered. Isa was stronger now, his focus was sharper than it had been in the past, and Jacob wasn't going to sit back and accept defeat.
Everyone thought that Isa was more of a grinder, that he did not have the explosive speeds that Infinite Warcry was capable of, and in some ways that was a bit of an unfair comment. He had shown himself to have some explosive power on the dirt and just had not been ran that way on the turf. Still, given the competition it was probably better to run grinder more than explosive and when Infini did draw even with Isa again... Well, the colt had the courage and heart in him to press forwards and keep stride. He had showed it time and time again that the more he was underestimated the better he became at showing off unusual talent.
Led onto the track by handler, Lucas Lanning, Isa was in fine shape and good form. He moved with magnificent power with dark brown eyes gleaming brightly. There was no sign of tension, no sign of wariness, just the bouncy, energetic step of a colt ready to run. Of course, the stable were intending to keep the colt energetic and so today's workout was not going to be a strenuous one, a simple three furlong gallop with no pressure to ensure he wasn't too hot and make sure he was in the best shape he could be for the race.
Jacob greeted the colt quickly before being put in the saddle and quickly found his stirrups. He was itching to do this workout before going to find Tanya and get some advice. After all, she had handled this sort of pressure in the Coaching Club American Oaks when Paradise Island had taken the Triple Tiara and was sure to know a thing or two about ensuring that the horse gave their best under strenuous circumstances.
Lucas brought the colt to a halt at the three furlong mark, patted the colt's muscular rump and grinned. This was it, the final hurdle. If this was pulled off he would have been involved with not one but two glorious moments this year! The colt tossed his head, fidgeted a little and Lucas waited for him to settle. A few seconds later, and he released his grip on the reign, watching as the horse moved away.
The turf was pretty solid under-hoof, the recent heat ensuring that the track conditions were impressive for this notable race and the colt seemed more than comfortable as he strode forwards, his pace picking up a little as he found his hooves beneath him.
